Abbott, a global healthcare leader, has launched the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor in India, a device that delivers automatic glucose readings every minute directly to a user’s smartphone. The innovation aims to provide people living with diabetes greater confidence, precision, and ease in managing their condition.
India has the world’s second-largest diabetes population, with 101 million people affected. Abbott highlighted that continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) like FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus play a critical role in improving real-time diabetes management and preventing complications.
“FreeStyle Libre technology is transforming diabetes care for more than seven million people worldwide. Bringing this breakthrough to India marks a major step toward empowering individuals to manage their condition more effectively,” said Dr. Kenneth Lee, regional medical affairs director, Asia Pacific, Diabetes Division, Abbott.
The device eliminates the need for routine fingersticks, providing reliable readings across all patient groups. Clinical studies have shown FreeStyle Libre technology can reduce hypoglycemic episodes by up to 43%, lower HbA1c levels by as much as 1.5%, and cut hospital visits by 66%.
Using NFC and Bluetooth, the sensor sends continuous glucose data to compatible smartphones and can be worn for up to 15 days. Available nationwide, it can be used by adults, children aged two and above, and women with gestational diabetes.
