Abbott received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for updates to its CardioMEMS HF System, introducing new patient-facing capabilities through the CardioGuide HF App. The updated system will allow care teams to enable US-based CardioMEMS patients to view their Pulmonary Artery Pressure (PAP) readings directly on their smartphones.
The new capabilities are designed to give patients greater visibility into their pulmonary artery pressure trends and support more active participation in heart failure management. The CardioMEMS HF System uses an implanted sensor in the pulmonary artery to measure PAP, which can increase as heart failure worsens, often before symptoms become apparent.
For more than a decade, clinicians have used CardioMEMS PAP readings to monitor patients and identify potential signs of worsening heart failure, allowing treatment to be adjusted based on changes in pressure. Abbott said the updated system extends this monitoring approach by connecting patients more directly with their care teams between clinical visits.
The CardioGuide HF App will display individual PAP readings and trends on patients’ iOS or Android smartphones. The app is designed for patients with an implanted CardioMEMS pulmonary artery pressure sensor and complements the existing CardioMEMS HERO device and Merlin.net Patient Care Network Portal.
The FDA-approved updates also include Dynamic Treatment Plan (DTP), a software feature that allows clinicians to establish personalised medication adjustment plans based on changes in a patient’s PAP. When enabled by a care team, DTP can deliver medication adjustment instructions to patients through the CardioGuide HF App.
Abbott said the new capabilities are intended to provide patients with timely information and treatment guidance while maintaining communication with their care teams between doctor visits.
The CardioMEMS HF System includes an implanted pulmonary artery pressure sensor, the CardioMEMS HERO device and the Merlin.net Patient Care Network Portal. Patients use the HERO device to take pressure readings, which are transmitted to their care teams through the Merlin.net platform. The CardioGuide HF App adds direct patient access to PAP readings and trends.
Abbott plans to make the CardioGuide HF App and Dynamic Treatment Plan available later in 2026.
