Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals has announced the launch of the world’s first Lasmiditan dispersible tablets, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of acute migraine. The formulation, approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), is designed to offer a more convenient and patient-friendly option for individuals seeking rapid relief during sudden migraine attacks.
Migraine remains one of the most prevalent neurological disorders globally, affecting over one billion people. Characterised by recurring episodes of intense, often one-sided headaches accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound, the condition continues to be under-recognised and inadequately treated.
The newly introduced dispersible tablet formulation addresses key challenges faced by patients during migraine episodes. Symptoms such as nausea, gastric stasis and difficulty swallowing often make conventional oral medications hard to consume. Akums’ dispersible tablets can be easily mixed with a small amount of water, enabling smoother intake and improving treatment adherence during acute attacks.
The formulation incorporates a dual disintegration mechanism—swelling and effervescence, allowing rapid dispersion and faster onset of action. Additionally, advanced taste-masking technology has been developed to counter the naturally bitter taste of Lasmiditan, enhancing overall palatability and making the medication easier to administer.
Lasmiditan belongs to the ‘ditans’ class of anti-migraine drugs and functions as a highly selective serotonin 5-HT1F receptor agonist. Its targeted action on migraine-related neural pathways differentiates it from conventional treatments, making it an effective option for the acute management of migraine with or without aura in adults.
Commenting on the development, Arushi Jain, Director at Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, said the innovation was aimed at addressing real patient challenges during migraine episodes, particularly when conventional tablets become difficult to consume due to nausea or swallowing issues.
By combining targeted drug action with a patient-centric dosage format, the new dispersible tablets represent a next-generation solution in migraine care. The launch reinforces Akums’ focus on innovation-driven pharmaceutical development, leveraging advanced R&D and manufacturing capabilities to improve patient outcomes and accessibility.
