Alembic Pharma Acquires American Utility Therapeutics for USD 12 Million

Alembic Pharmaceuticals Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd., has acquired American Utility Therapeutics for USD 12 million (over INR 100 crore), strengthening its presence in the US market.

Utility Therapeutics is a biotechnology company focused on developing and commercialising innovative Urinary tract infection (UTI) treatments.

The acquisition includes 100 percent ownership of Utility Therapeutics, and the deal is expected to be completed within 30 days, according to a filing made by the company with the stock exchange.

Subsequently, Alembic will begin commercialisation of Utility’s FDA-approved and underdevelopment products in the US market.

Pivya (pivmethecillam) is the company’s FDA-approved product to treat uncomplicated UTIs, granted approval in April 2024. Another product, mecillinam (MEC), is currently in development for the treatment of complicated UTIs.

Last month, Alembic Pharmaceuticals received the final approval from the USFDA for its abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) for Doxorubicin Hydrochloride Liposome Injection.

The injection is indicated for the treatment of ovarian cancer, AIDS-related kaposi’s sarcoma, and multiple myeloma. 

Headquartered in Gujarat, Alembic manufactures and markets India formulations, international generics, and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) across the globe.
