AmacaThera, a leading biotechnology company specialising in next-generation hydrogel-based drug delivery systems, has entered into an exclusive global licensing agreement with Pacira BioSciences, Inc., a leader in non-opioid pain management, to develop and commercialise AMT-143 — an investigational long-acting, non-opioid anaesthetic designed for post-operative pain relief.

AMT-143, developed using AmacaThera’s proprietary hydrogel platform, enables precise, localised, and sustained drug release. In a phase 1 trial, the formulation achieved a controlled release of ropivacaine for up to 14 days. The company’s adaptable technology supports a wide range of therapeutics, from small molecules to biologics, offering scalable and customisable drug delivery options.

Under the agreement, AmacaThera will receive USD 5 million upfront, with potential milestone payments of up to USD 225 million and tiered royalties on future sales. Both companies will jointly advance clinical development, with AmacaThera leading select studies and Pacira funding development through commercial launch. A phase 2 trial is expected to begin in 2026, after which Pacira will assume full responsibility for AMT-143’s development, manufacturing, and marketing.

The collaboration underscores both companies’ shared commitment to advancing innovative, opioid-sparing solutions for post-surgical pain management.
