Amgen Commits USD 650 Million to USA Manufacturing Expansion Ahead of Tariff Pressure

Amgen has announced plans to invest USD 650 million in expanding its USA manufacturing network, with a focus on its biologics facility in Juncos, Puerto Rico, while integrating advanced technologies across its operations. The expansion is expected to create nearly 750 jobs, covering both construction and skilled manufacturing roles.

The move comes amid escalating trade tensions, as the USA government considers imposing 100 percent tariffs on branded pharmaceutical imports unless companies establish domestic production. By making significant capital commitments within the USA, Amgen aims to strengthen supply chain resilience and potentially secure exemptions from the proposed tariffs.

Robert A. Bradway, chairman and CEO of Amgen, stated that the expansion highlights the company’s commitment to USA biomanufacturing and reinforces its ability to deliver innovative medicines. He added that the enlarged facility would not only meet patient needs but also contribute to America’s position as a global leader in biotechnology.

Amgen’s expansion reflects a broader industry trend, with other global drugmakers also stepping up their USA investments to mitigate tariff risks and respond to increasing pressure for onshore manufacturing. Analysts view Amgen’s move as both a strategic response to shifting trade dynamics and a long-term investment in competitiveness.

This is not Amgen’s first major USA commitment this year. The company has already announced substantial investment plans in California, alongside expansion projects in Ohio and North Carolina, signalling a wider strategy to strengthen its domestic manufacturing footprint.

With pharmaceutical trade policy becoming increasingly uncertain, such investments are expected to be crucial for companies looking to maintain global competitiveness, adapt to regulatory pressures, and safeguard supply chains.
