Aphios Corporation Secures US Patent Allowance for Novel Bryoid Therapeutics Targeting Neurodegenerative Diseases and Cancer

Aphios Corporation, an emerging biotechnology company focused on advanced therapeutics and enabling technologies for drug discovery and delivery, has announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a Notice of Allowance for a divisional patent application titled ‘Bryoid Compositions, Methods of Making and Use Thereof.’ The patent covers novel Bryoid compounds with potential applications in neurodegenerative diseases, HIV latency reversal, cancer and other amyloid-mediated disorders.

The allowed claims relate to a proprietary Bryoid composition known as B14B, including methods for its isolation, purification and manufacturing. According to the USPTO, the composition demonstrated novelty and non-obviousness compared with existing bryostatin-related technologies.

The patent application forms part of Aphios Corporation’s expanding intellectual property portfolio focused on marine bryozoan-derived natural products and advanced purification technologies. The research supporting the invention was partly funded by the National Institute on Aging and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Bryoids are structurally related to bryostatins, a class of macrocyclic compounds recognised for their ability to regulate Protein Kinase C (PKC) pathways linked to neurodegeneration, viral latency and cancer biology. Experimental findings included in the patent application indicate that several novel Bryoid compounds demonstrated biological activity comparable to or exceeding Bryostatin-1 in stimulating alpha-secretase activity and PKC signalling pathways associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other central nervous system disorders.

The application also describes multiple proprietary Bryoid analogs with molecular structures distinct from known Bryostatins 1–20. Laboratory studies conducted in SHSY-5Y neuroblastoma cells showed enhanced alpha-secretase activity and improved PKC modulation.

Dr. Trevor P. Castor, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aphios Corporation, said the Bryoid platform represents a significant advancement in marine-derived therapeutic discovery and development. He noted that the Notice of Allowance further validates the company’s Bryoid technology while strengthening its intellectual property position in neurodegenerative disease therapeutics, HIV latency reversal strategies and oncology applications.

Aphios’ Bryoid platform combines proprietary extraction, purification and characterisation technologies, including its SuperFluids processing platform, to isolate highly pure Bryoid compounds from Bugula neritina and related marine organisms.

The company believes these compounds have the potential to serve as next-generation therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, HIV-1 latency reversal and other serious disorders with high unmet medical need.

The latest Notice of Allowance follows several previously issued patents related to Bryoid compositions and further expands Aphios Corporation’s intellectual property portfolio, which now includes more than 85 issued and pending US and international patents.

Aphios Corporation’s technology platforms span SuperFluids extraction and purification systems, nanotechnology-based drug delivery platforms and novel therapeutic programmes targeting cancer, infectious diseases and central nervous system disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, addiction, pain and anxiety.

The research was partially supported through a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute on Aging under the NIH.
