Armata Pharmaceuticals has announced issuance of 2 patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) covering its bacteriophage programs, AP-SA02 and AP-PA02. These newly issued US patents support Armata's leadership in bacteriophage therapeutics and specifically strengthen the Intellectual Property (IP) around the AP-SA02 and AP-PA02 programs, which are highly impactful and potential first- and best-in-class therapies.
With patent protection extending into at least 2041, Armata's programs are supported by a robust, long-term IP foundation, with additional patents pending.
Dr. Deborah Birx, Chief Executive Officer, Armata Pharmaceuticals, said, "These are 2 important patents for our company. Not only do they strengthen our programs in Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but they also exemplify our strategy of protecting each phage cocktail that is created using our proprietary phage platform. With the rapidly growing interest in phage-based therapeutics as a potentially improved treatment option against antibiotic-resistant and difficult-to-treat bacterial strains, our Intellectual Property is increasingly vital to protecting our position as a leader in this promising treatment modality. The issuance of these key patents further reinforces the uniqueness of our bacteriophage programs and our phase 3-ready candidate, AP-SA02, which is scheduled to enter a superiority study later this year."
Armata's bacteriophage IP portfolio includes 15 patent families with issued or pending claims covering the company's bacteriophage development programs.
With these issuances, the company's global IP portfolio consists of 101 issued patents (15 US and 86 ex-US) and 60 pending patent applications (9 US and 51 ex-US) with nominal expiration dates through 2046.
The US Patent No. 12,751,983 is Bacteriophage Compositions For Treating Staphylococcus Infection. Issued on October 6, 2026, it protects methods of treating Staphylococcus aureus infections using its lead product candidate, AP-SA02, which is currently in development for adjunct treatment of complicated Staphylococcus Aureus Bacteremia (SAB) caused by Methicillin-Sensitive S Aureus (MSSA) or Methicillin-Resistant S Aureus (MRSA).
The patent is expected to provide patent protection until at least February 2041, and may be eligible for patent term adjustments or patent term extensions affording even later protection.
The US Patent No. 12,594,312 is for Bacteriophage Compositions For Treating Pseudomonas Infection. Issued on April 7, 2026, it protects methods of treating Pseudomonas infections using its clinical candidate, AP-PA02, which is in development against various diseases or indications caused by Pseudomonas infections. The patent is expected to provide patent protection until about January 4, 2043 which includes 617 days of patent term adjustments, and this case may be eligible as well for patent term extensions affording even later protection.
