The department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Shiddha and Homoeopathy (Ayush) in collaboration with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is working on developing four formulations of traditional medicine to treat the novel coronavirus infections and accordingly clinical trials are also being planned within next one week.
According to Ayush secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, four formulations of Ayurvedic related medicines meant for curing COVID-19 disease are in the process of validation and very soon will undergoing trials. "As the world is fighting with the corona virus pandemic and as there is no medicine or vaccine developed till date, we are hopeful that if the Indian trials for the traditional medicines go as per our predictions, then I am sure India will become the first country in the world to show a solution to the deadly virus," Kotecha expressed hope.
Currently the Ayush department in collaboration with CSIR is studying on 4 potential ayurvedic medicines called Ashwagandha, Yashtimadhu (Mulethi), Guduchi+Piippali (Giloy) and Ayush-64. All these medicines are earlier indicated for the treatment of malaria and now, the scientists are trying to repurpose these four potential candidates and very soon put them to clinical trials to find out if they can cure the deadly coronavirus infections among the public.
In fact, earlier the CSIR Director General Shekar Mande had called up on the scientists working on traditional medicines in India to work on the potential Ayush medicines on the lines of modern science perspective so that the Indian traditional medicines could get acceptability.
In view of this, the scientists are working on two types of stimulus studies as profile access on the high-risk population of Ashwagandha. The scientists have also planned a competitive study between hydroxychloroquine and Ashwagandha and trying their best to succeed in coming out with a potential medicine that could be cured with the Indian traditional medicines.
