BDR Pharmaceuticals International has launched Xatronem-AV (aztreonam + avibactam injection) 2 g, an advanced antibacterial therapy designed to treat serious infections caused by Multidrug-Resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria, strengthening the company's portfolio of critical care medicines.
The launch comes as Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) continues to pose a growing global public health challenge. Drug-resistant infections are estimated to directly cause nearly 1.9 million deaths annually and are associated with more than 8.2 million deaths worldwide each year. According to findings published in The Lancet, AMR could contribute to nearly 39 million deaths between 2025 and 2050 while imposing an estimated annual economic burden of around USD 1 trillion through increased healthcare costs and productivity losses.
Xatronem-AV has been developed for use in hospitalised patients suffering from severe bacterial infections, including complicated intra-abdominal infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, bloodstream infections and other serious Gram-negative infections where conventional antibiotic therapies may no longer be effective.
The 2 g injectable formulation is expected to improve access to advanced antimicrobial treatment options for critically ill patients and support timely intervention against carbapenem-resistant and multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections.
BDR Pharma said the launch builds on its portfolio of innovative therapies, which includes brands such as Xavitaz, Zisavel and Dalbonova, along with several first generic introductions in India, including caspofungin, anidulafungin and biapenem. The company stated that it remains focused on expanding access to high-quality therapies for patients with life-threatening conditions.
The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance has significantly complicated patient management worldwide, with infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative organisms often resulting in prolonged hospitalisation, higher treatment costs, increased mortality and limited therapeutic options. The availability of newer treatment alternatives is expected to help clinicians make more targeted treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes.
Commenting on the launch, Dharmesh Shah, Chairman of BDR Pharma, said antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most significant healthcare challenges globally, placing immense pressure on patients and healthcare systems. He said the introduction of Xatronem-AV aims to provide healthcare professionals with an important therapeutic option for managing multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections while reinforcing the company's commitment to delivering innovative and accessible medicines for patients with critical healthcare needs.
Established in 2003, BDR Pharmaceuticals International has built a strong presence in both domestic and international pharmaceutical markets. The company operates across Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing and formulation development through its group companies, BDR Pharmaceuticals International and BDR Life Sciences, focusing on specialised and advanced pharmaceutical products.
