Boehringer Ingelheim has acquired Evax AG, a Swiss biotechnology company focused on developing innovative therapeutic solutions for equine health. The acquisition expands Boehringer Ingelheim’s animal health innovation portfolio and strengthens its focus on therapeutic vaccines for diseases with significant unmet needs in horses.

Founded more than a decade ago at the University of Zurich, Evax has been developing therapeutic vaccine technologies targeting major health challenges in horses, particularly allergic skin diseases. Its approach uses virus-like particles designed to stimulate the horse’s immune system to generate neutralising antibodies against disease-associated targets.

Allergic and dermatological conditions are common among horses and can significantly affect their health and wellbeing. Existing management approaches can be time-consuming and may provide only temporary relief, while certain treatments, including corticosteroids, can present safety considerations. Evax’s therapeutic vaccine technology is being developed with the aim of addressing the underlying mechanisms of disease and potentially providing longer-lasting treatment effects.

The acquisition will bring Evax’s technology and expertise into Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, providing the Swiss biotech with access to the company’s research, development, manufacturing and commercial capabilities.

The transaction also builds on Boehringer Ingelheim’s broader efforts to develop therapeutic vaccines. The company has been pursuing vaccine-based approaches for several years, including its collaboration with and subsequent acquisition of Saiba Animal Health in 2024.

According to Boehringer Ingelheim, virus-like particle technology could provide a new approach to treating chronic and allergy-related conditions in animals. The company sees potential applications extending beyond equine health, including other areas where conventional treatment options remain limited.
