Chiesi Group Expands Partnership with Bespak to Scale Up Low-Carbon Inhaler Manufacturing

Chiesi Group, a biopharmaceutical company and certified B Corp, has expanded its long-standing collaboration with inhalation CDMO Bespak to increase the manufacturing capacity of pressurised Metered Dose Inhalers (pMDIs). The additional capacity will be established at Bespak’s Holmes Chapel facility in the UK to support the next phase of Chiesi’s Carbon Minimal Inhaler (CMI) programme.

The agreement builds on years of collaboration between the two companies and reflects a shared commitment to delivering lower-carbon inhaled therapies at scale without compromising treatment access or continuity of care for patients. The initiative also aligns with the companies’ broader sustainability goals, including Chiesi’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035 and Bespak’s validated decarbonisation roadmap.

The CMI programme aims to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of pMDIs by up to 90 per cent through the use of next-generation propellants with lower global warming potential. At the same time, the inhalers are designed to retain established treatment options and maintain device familiarity for patients. By expanding manufacturing capacity, the partnership seeks to ensure a reliable supply of these sustainable inhalers while supporting a gradual transition to environmentally responsible respiratory treatments.

The collaboration further strengthens Bespak’s Holmes Chapel facility as a key manufacturing hub for next-generation inhalation products within the global pharmaceutical supply chain. Located in the North West of England’s inhalation research and manufacturing cluster, the site brings advanced technical capabilities and specialised expertise in sustainable inhaler production.

Executives from both companies highlighted that the expanded partnership demonstrates how industry collaboration can accelerate sustainable innovation in healthcare while maintaining patient safety and treatment reliability.
