Clearsynth Labs has received a grant from the Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, to establish a dedicated bulk manufacturing facility for deuterated reagents, intermediates, and building blocks. This strategic initiative is poised to significantly enhance India’s capabilities in advanced specialty chemicals.
Deuterated compounds play a vital role in cutting-edge sectors such as fiber optics, semiconductors, OLEDs, defense, and pharmaceuticals. Despite India's strong pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem, the country has so far relied on imports for high-purity deuterated chemicals due to a lack of scalable, domestic production technologies.
With support from TDB, Clearsynth aims to position India as a competitive global supplier in this high-value, niche space. The facility will reduce import dependency, support the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, and enable innovation-led growth through IP generation and job creation in R&D and chemical manufacturing.
A key enabler of the project is Clearsynth’s collaboration with the Heavy Water Board (HWB), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. HWB, which first partnered with private players in 2018 to promote non-nuclear applications of heavy water, ensures reliable and cost-effective access to heavy water for the project, enabling scalability and global competitiveness.
This initiative is expected to contribute to:
-
Development of indigenous capabilities in isotope-labelled compounds
-
Import substitution and foreign exchange savings
-
Innovation through domestic IP
-
Creation of high-skilled jobs
-
Positioning India as a trusted global source for deuterated compounds
