Emergent BioSolutions has announced that Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority has approved an expanded indication for ACAM2000, allowing its use for the prevention of Mpox in adults identified as being at high risk of infection.

The approval is supported by existing human safety data and findings from controlled animal studies demonstrating the vaccine’s effectiveness in protecting against mpox virus exposure. This development broadens the authorised use of ACAM2000 in Singapore, enhancing the country’s ability to respond to emerging public health threats.

ACAM2000, a single-dose live vaccine administered percutaneously using a bifurcated needle, was initially approved in Singapore in 2009 for protection against Smallpox in high-risk individuals. With this expanded approval, it can now also be deployed during mpox outbreaks, particularly in cases involving severe or life-threatening disease where alternative vaccines are unavailable or unsuitable.

Mpox, an infectious disease caused by a double-stranded DNA virus, is endemic in parts of Central and West Africa but has drawn global attention due to recent outbreaks. The expanded indication for ACAM2000 reinforces Singapore’s preparedness strategy by enabling timely immunisation of vulnerable populations.
