Evernorth Invests USD 3.5 Billion in Shields to Deepen Specialty Pharmacy Reach

Evernorth, a subsidiary of Cigna Group, is investing USD 3.5 billion in Shields Health Solutions, a company focused on specialty pharmacy management. This investment arrives as Shields establishes itself as a standalone entity following its acquisition by private equity firm Sycamore Partners after the Walgreens demerger.

Structured as preferred stock, the deal allows Evernorth to expand its service offerings in the growing specialty pharmacy market while preserving options for future investment. Cigna has indicated that the investment will not significantly affect its previously issued adjusted earnings-per-share guidance for 2025.

Shields serves over 80 health systems and more than 1,000 hospitals and clinics across nearly all fifty states. The company's model supports hospitals and healthcare systems in establishing and managing their own specialty pharmacy operations—integral for delivering medications for complex and chronic conditions.

According to Cigna’s CEO David Cordani, "Demand for specialty medications continues to grow at an accelerated pace, and Evernorth is uniquely positioned to serve the rapidly expanding number of individuals living with complex and chronic conditions and the doctors who care for them." The investment is viewed as a strategic extension of Evernorth’s existing specialty offerings, including home infusion services, direct-to-patient pharmacies, and medication distribution.
