FibroBiologics, Inc. has secured a new US patent covering the therapeutic use of fibroblasts and fibroblast-derived materials for wound healing, strengthening the company’s intellectual property portfolio in regenerative medicine.

The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued Patent No. 12,721,866, titled “Therapeutic Use of Fibroblasts for Use in Wound Healing,” on September 1, 2026. The patent covers methods for treating and accelerating wound healing through the topical administration of compositions containing fibroblasts or fibroblast-derived materials.

The issued claims include the use of 3D spheroid fibroblasts and materials such as extracellular vesicles, exosomes, microvesicles, apoptotic bodies and fibroblast cell fragments. The technology covers potential applications in chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure wounds, bedsores and burns, as well as cuts and abrasions.

According to FibroBiologics, preclinical studies cited in the patent showed that wounds treated with fibroblast spheroids and fibroblast-derived materials healed faster than controls in both diabetic and non-diabetic models. The company said the studies also demonstrated accelerated wound closure and reduced inflammation.

The patent adds to FibroBiologics’ portfolio of 270 plus issued and pending patents across the US and internationally, spanning areas including wound healing, multiple sclerosis, disc degeneration, psoriasis, orthopedics, longevity and cancer.
