Galderma has launched Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne in Japan, marking the first authorization of hyaluronic acid injectables powered by its proprietary Optimal Balance Technology (OBT) in the country. The products are designed for mid-to-deep dermal injection to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and are now commercially available.
Both injectables are engineered to balance softness, flexibility, and structural support, allowing them to move naturally with facial expressions while maintaining lift. Restylane Refyne features a smooth, flexible gel suited for delicate, highly expressive facial areas, while Restylane Defyne is formulated to provide greater support in areas such as the jawline and deeper folds. The introduction expands Galderma’s aesthetics portfolio in Japan and aligns with its broader regional growth strategy.
With the addition of Refyne and Defyne, the Restylane portfolio in Japan now includes four products, joining NASHA-based Restylane Classyc and Restylane Lyft. This expanded range allows clinicians to tailor treatments based on patient needs, from subtle line correction to contouring and structural enhancement.
Regulatory approvals were supported by two randomized, double-blinded, active-controlled phase III studies involving more than 300 participants combined. Both products demonstrated clinically meaningful improvements in wrinkle severity lasting up to 12 months, with a majority of participants reporting visible improvement within six weeks.
Company leadership described the launch as an important milestone that broadens treatment precision for clinicians and aligns Japan’s aesthetic offerings with international standards. The company emphasized Japan’s strategic importance as a growth market and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to advanced aesthetic technologies.
Restylane has more than three decades of clinical use globally, with over 77 million treatments administered. Its portfolio leverages multiple proprietary technologies — including NASHA and OBT — to deliver gels ranging from firm structural support to high flexibility, enabling personalized aesthetic outcomes designed to appear natural.
Galderma operates as a global dermatology-focused company with a portfolio spanning injectable aesthetics, dermatological skincare, and therapeutic dermatology, serving markets in approximately 90 countries.
