Gerresheimer and Portal Instruments Strengthen Alliance for PRIME NEXUS Reusable Autoinjector

Gerresheimer, the German manufacturer specialising in packaging for the pharma, biotech, and cosmetics industries, is deepening its collaboration with medical device company Portal Instruments to commercialise the Prime NEXUS reusable, connected autoinjector platform.

The partnership combines Portal Instruments’ innovative device technology with Gerresheimer’s global footprint, expertise and excellence in primary packaging and high-volume device manufacturing. Together, the companies will offer pharma customers an integrated, end-to-end drug delivery solution.

“This partnership capitalizes on our respective strengths and shared dedication to innovation and sustainability. It underlines our positioning as a system and solution provider to the pharma industry and our commitment to helping customers deliver life-enhancing therapies to patients with chronic diseases,” said Daniel Diezi, Global Senior Vice President Advanced Technologies at Gerresheimer.

Dr. Patrick Anquetil, CEO at Portal Instruments, expressed excitement over the expansion of their collaboration with Gerresheimer, stating, “Together we offer pharma companies a comprehensive solution combining Gerresheimer’s world-class primary packaging and device manufacturing excellence, with our innovative engineering and patient-centric design. Pharma companies benefit from accelerated time to market and reduced complexity of working with multiple suppliers.”

The PRIME NEXUS autoinjector, designed by Portal Instruments, is a reusable electromechanical platform that enables consistent, subcutaneous self-injection of drugs for chronic diseases, including diabetes and autoimmune disorders. Compatible with 1 mL and 2.25 mL syringes produced by Gerresheimer, it supports a wide range of fill volumes and drug viscosities (tested up to 600 cP), making it suitable for both small- and large-molecule formulations.

The device has already completed functional and usability testing and is now ready for feasibility testing with a specific drug formulation.
