Gilead Sciences has opened a 182,000-square-foot research centre at its headquarters in Foster City, California, expanding its research capabilities in oncology, inflammation and research data science.
The five-story facility will support approximately 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists, and brings together research teams across key scientific disciplines to strengthen collaboration and accelerate drug discovery.
Designed with input from Gilead’s research teams, the centre includes flexible laboratory spaces, specialised collaboration areas and shared technology platforms. The facility also features all-electric systems, energy-efficient design and water-saving landscaping with California native plants, supporting the company’s goal of achieving LEED Gold certification.
“This is a moment of unprecedented opportunity in science and technology. Our new Research Center will help Gilead scientists make the most of that opportunity, delivering more breakthrough medicines faster,” said Daniel O’Day, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Gilead Sciences.
The new research centre is one of three major projects at Gilead’s Foster City campus forming part of the company’s broader USD 32 billion investment in the United States. The Technical Development Centre is expected to open in 2027, while a new biologics facility, which began construction in August, is expected to open in 2029.
Gilead said the broader US investment is expected to create 3,000 high-quality domestic jobs and strengthen its research, development and manufacturing infrastructure through 2030.
The company currently employs approximately 11,000 people across the US, including more than 7,400 in California and nearly 4,700 in the Bay Area. The company operates in more than 35 countries and develops medicines for diseases including HIV, viral hepatitis, COVID-19, cancer and inflammatory conditions.
