India Clears 48 Projects Under PLI Scheme to Boost Domestic Production of Key Drug Ingredients

A total of 48 projects have been approved under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme to boost domestic manufacturing of critical Key Starting Materials (KSMs), Drug Intermediates (DIs), and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in India, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Anupriya Patel informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question.

The list of beneficiaries under the scheme includes companies such as Lyfius Pharma, Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals, Kinvan, Orchid Bio-Pharma, Macleods Pharmaceutical, Natural Biogenex, and Symbiotec Pharmalab.

Launched in March 2020, the PLI scheme aims to ensure an uninterrupted supply of critical APIs used to make critical drugs by reducing supply disruption risk caused by excessive dependence on single source.

Prior to the implementation of the scheme, most of these essential products were primarily imported.

As of December 2024, the scheme has attracted an investment of INR 4,254 crore, exceeding the original commitment of INR 3,938.5 crore over six years.

The initiative has so far generated cumulative sales of INR 1,556 crore, including exports worth INR 412 crore, while also helping the country avoid imports valued at INR 1,144 crore.

The scheme has also facilitated the creation of domestic manufacturing capacity for 25 identified KSMs, DIs, and APIs.
