India, Myanmar Explore Fast-Track Pharma Approvals; MoU Likely at iPHEX 2025

In a key step to strengthen pharmaceutical trade ties, Raja Bhanu, Director General of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), and Dr. Win Kyaing, Chairman of the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce for Pharmaceutical and Medical Device (MCCPMD), have initiated discussions to streamline regulatory approvals for Indian pharmaceutical products in Myanmar.

India is currently a major supplier of medicines to Myanmar, meeting nearly 60% of the country’s pharmaceutical needs. To deepen this collaboration, Dr. Win Kyaing has agreed in principle to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during iPHEX 2025, scheduled from September 4–6 at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The MoU will aim to expand bilateral cooperation in pharma trade and regulatory alignment.

Raja Bhanu highlighted that Pharmexcil has also engaged with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to promote global opportunities for Indian exporters. iPHEX 2025 will introduce a B2B web platform that offers member companies greater visibility and allows overseas buyers to explore and order products digitally. The event will be instrumental in showcasing India’s leadership in quality pharmaceuticals and affordable healthcare solutions.

In FY 2024–25, India’s pharmaceutical exports to Myanmar reached USD 168.16 million for medicaments packaged for retail sale, driven by demand for high-quality, affordable Indian medicines. The trade has been further facilitated by the Rupee-Kyat Trade Settlement Mechanism, operational since January 25, 2024, allowing smoother bilateral transactions in Indian currency.

Besides retail medicaments, India also exports vaccines and various pharmaceutical goods to Myanmar. The ongoing trade discussions and upcoming MoU at iPHEX 2025 are expected to boost confidence among exporters and regulators, opening doors to faster market access and enhanced cooperation in the pharma sector.
