The treatment landscape for blood disorders is witnessing a significant transformation, with medical advancements shifting the focus from long-term disease management to potential curative therapies. These developments were at the centre of discussions during a medical event hosted by Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, which brought together healthcare professionals to reflect on the hospital’s achievement of performing more than 1,400 bone marrow transplants.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Meet Kumar, Clinical Director and Head – Hemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), Marengo Asia Hospitals, said the field has undergone remarkable progress over the past decade. He noted that treatment strategies have evolved from primarily helping patients cope with chronic conditions to offering therapies aimed at curing diseases. While bone marrow transplantation continues to remain a cornerstone of treatment, emerging approaches such as gene therapy and cellular therapies are expected to play an increasingly important role in the future. According to Dr. Kumar, the objective is not only to improve survival rates but also to enhance patients’ quality of life.
Dr. Raajiv Singhal, Founding Member, Group Managing Director and CEO, Marengo Asia Hospitals, highlighted the institution’s commitment to building centres of excellence focused on clinical expertise and patient outcomes. He said the milestone of more than 1,400 bone marrow transplants reflects the dedication and expertise of the hospital’s BMT team.
He added that providing clinicians with the right infrastructure and support enables them to develop programmes that deliver high-quality healthcare and create lasting positive impacts for patients and their families.
Medical experts at the event observed that the National Capital Region (NCR) has emerged as a major referral hub for the treatment of blood disorders. Patients from Haryana, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and neighbouring regions increasingly travel to NCR for specialised care. Improved awareness and access to advanced treatment options have also contributed to earlier diagnosis and better clinical outcomes.
The discussions covered a broad range of topics, including transplantation procedures, gene therapy, cellular treatments and stem cell science. Experts noted that blood disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia and thalassemia continue to affect thousands of families across the region. Although bone marrow transplantation remains one of the most effective treatment options for several of these conditions, challenges such as donor availability, treatment affordability and awareness continue to persist.
Harpreet Singh, Facility Director, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, stressed the importance of expanding access to advanced healthcare facilities. He said that while healthcare innovations have progressed significantly, ensuring that patients can benefit from these advancements remains equally important. According to him, future progress in blood disease treatment will depend not only on technology but also on improving awareness and affordability.
Experts concluded that while bone marrow transplantation remains an essential treatment modality today, advancements in gene editing and cellular therapies are expected to create new possibilities for managing blood disorders in the years ahead, potentially making curative treatments more accessible to a wider patient population.
