National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority Seeks Pricing Data for Gentamicin Formulation to Revise Ceiling Prices

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has asked manufacturers and marketing companies of the antibiotic formulation Gentamicin 40 mg/100 ml to submit key pricing data for October 2023. The directive, issued through an Office Memorandum dated April 17, 2026, requires companies to furnish details within seven working days.

As part of the submission, companies must provide information on Price to Retailer (PTR) and Moving Annual Turnover (MAT) in value terms, along with specifics such as dosage form, strength, brand name and pack size in a prescribed format.

Gentamicin is widely used to treat bacterial infections across various parts of the body by inhibiting bacterial growth or killing harmful bacteria. The data collection exercise is part of NPPA’s ongoing efforts to revise ceiling prices of scheduled formulations under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013.

The authority has been using October 2023 as the reference price database for fixing ceiling prices since 2024, replacing the earlier July 2022 dataset. This shift follows a decision taken during an NPPA meeting held on January 24, 2024, to adopt more recent market-based data for improved pricing accuracy.

Under provisions of the DPCO, the government is empowered to use market data from any suitable period when determining or revising ceiling prices. The move is expected to help ensure fair pricing of essential medicines while maintaining accessibility for patients.
