Novo Nordisk has entered into a strategic collaboration with US-based Vivtex to develop next-generation oral biologic therapies for obesity, diabetes and related metabolic conditions. Under the agreement, Vivtex is eligible to receive up to USD 2.1 billion, including upfront payments, research funding, development and commercial milestone payments, and tiered royalties on potential product sales.

The partnership focuses on overcoming the long-standing scientific challenge of delivering large biologic molecules orally. Such therapies are typically administered via injection because of poor stability and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Vivtex’s proprietary platform combines gastrointestinal screening assays, advanced formulation technologies and artificial intelligence-driven analytics to enhance oral delivery of peptide and protein therapeutics.

As part of the deal, Novo Nordisk will lead global clinical development, regulatory filings, manufacturing and commercialisation of any products emerging from the collaboration. The Danish pharmaceutical major is strengthening its position in the fast-growing obesity and diabetes market, where demand for convenient and patient-friendly treatment options continues to rise.

The agreement also aligns with Novo Nordisk’s broader strategy to expand beyond injectable medicines and build a strong portfolio of oral biologics. If successful, the collaboration could significantly improve treatment accessibility and adherence by offering oral alternatives to injectable obesity therapies.

The partnership reflects a wider industry trend in which large pharmaceutical companies collaborate with specialised technology innovators to accelerate the development of advanced drug-delivery platforms.
