Qnovia, Inc., a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company, has secured a worldwide exclusive license from the University of Virginia Licensing and Ventures Group (UVA LVG) for D8, an innovative antimicrobial peptide designed to combat multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. The agreement marks the company's expansion into antimicrobial resistance, complementing its lead smoking cessation programme as it broadens its portfolio to address major global public health challenges.
D8 is designed to eliminate multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens and biodefense threat agents through a mechanism distinct from conventional antibiotics, reducing the likelihood of bacterial resistance. Early laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated promising activity against a wide range of human pathogens, including those responsible for respiratory, bloodstream, skin and soft-tissue infections.
Under the agreement, Qnovia has obtained worldwide exclusive rights to develop and commercialise D8 across all disease indications and routes of administration. The company will determine the most suitable delivery approach during the initial development phase, which will include preclinical studies to support an Investigational New Drug (IND) application.
Mario Danek, Founder and CEO of Qnovia, said antimicrobial resistance has emerged as one of the most pressing global healthcare challenges, affecting millions of people worldwide and complicating routine medical procedures, cancer treatment and intensive care. He noted that D8's unique mechanism of action differentiates it from existing antibiotics by preventing bacteria from developing resistance, offering a promising approach to tackling the growing threat of drug-resistant infections.
Qnovia has been collaborating with the Hughes-Crawford research group at the University of Virginia since 2023. Commenting on the partnership, Matthew Crawford, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia, said D8 represents a novel approach to treating life-threatening infections that currently have limited or no effective therapeutic options. He added that the collaboration with Qnovia provides a strong pathway to advance the peptide from laboratory research to clinical development and ultimately to patients.
According to public health researchers, antimicrobial resistance is expected to become one of the world's most significant health and economic challenges over the coming decades. A 2024 study by the Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) Project estimates that antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections could result in nearly 39 million deaths by 2050. In 2019 alone, such infections were associated with an estimated USD 693 billion in hospital costs and USD 194 billion in global productivity losses.
Qnovia is currently focused on two major therapeutic areas: smoking cessation through its lead programme, RespiRx, an inhaled nicotine replacement therapy, and antimicrobial resistance through the newly licensed D8 peptide. The University of Virginia Licensing and Ventures Group manages the university's intellectual property and commercialisation activities, supporting the translation of academic innovations into real-world healthcare solutions.
