SCHOTT Expands Manufacturing in Gujarat, Becomes Asia's Largest Producer of Syringe and Cartridge Glass Tubing

SCHOTT, a global leader in specialty glass, has announced the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Jambusar, Gujarat, by adding syringe and cartridge glass tubing production capabilities. This strategic development positions the plant as Asia’s largest producer of syringe and cartridge glass tubing and reinforces the company’s alignment with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The expansion is built on a direct technology transfer from SCHOTT’s operations in Germany and aims to cater to the rising global and domestic demand for biologics, including semaglutide—a GLP-1 receptor agonist used in weight management and type 2 diabetes treatment. With the GLP-1 segment expected to grow at a CAGR of 33 per cent, SCHOTT’s move is timely and targeted.

The new production capabilities complement SCHOTT India’s existing glass tubing lines for vials and ampoules, making it a comprehensive domestic source for injectable drug packaging. Highlighting the significance of the development, Sundeep Prabhu, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing at SCHOTT Glass India, stated that this milestone enhances India's pharmaceutical packaging infrastructure and strengthens the country’s healthcare self-sufficiency. SCHOTT has been operating in India since 1998 and has consistently supported the parenteral packaging sector.

The company emphasized the superior quality of its FIOLAX Type I borosilicate glass tubing, known for its tight geometric precision and consistent wall thickness—attributes crucial for stable plunger performance in prefillable syringes and cartridges. The FIOLAX tubing is manufactured under SCHOTT’s proprietary perfeXion quality system, which analyzes up to 100,000 data points per minute to ensure high precision and zero-defect production.

Pawan Kumar Shukla, President and Managing Director of SCHOTT Glass India, stated that the move not only ensures supply chain resilience but also empowers India’s pharma ecosystem through local production, skilled employment, and advanced manufacturing practices. India’s growing pharmaceutical market, availability of talent, and supportive regulatory framework were key factors influencing SCHOTT’s decision to expand locally.
