Strides Pharma Science Ltd., through a wholly-owned subsidiary, has announced plans to bring Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.’s WHO-prequalified generic contraceptive to African markets. The product, branded as “Medogen SubQ”, is a three-monthly subcutaneous injectable version of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) that can be administered by trained healthcare workers or self-injected after appropriate instruction.
Developed by Incepta with support from philanthropic organisations including the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and the Bill &?Melinda?Gates Foundation, the WHO pre-qualification of Medogen SubQ is a significant step in breaking the single-supplier model for DMPA-SC and helping health systems procure the product at more affordable prices.
Aditya Kumar, Executive Director of Business Development at Strides, noted the collaboration will expand the company’s Women’s Health franchise in Africa and enable greater reproductive-health choice for women in the region. The move fits with Strides’ “in Africa for Africa” strategy, reinforcing its commitment to affordable and high-quality contraceptives in underserved markets.
