Vyome Secures China Patent for Besifloxacin Topical Gel in Inflammatory Acne Treatment

Vyome Holdings, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing therapies for immuno-inflammatory and rare diseases, has received a patent from the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) for its proprietary besifloxacin topical gel programme targeting inflammatory acne.

The newly granted Chinese patent covers both formulation and therapeutic use claims, significantly expanding Vyome's intellectual property protection in one of the world's largest pharmaceutical markets.

The patent includes claims for the treatment of inflammatory acne, inflammation associated with acne, and acne involving antibiotic-resistant Propionibacterium acnes, strengthening the company's intellectual property position in the dermatology segment. According to the company, China’s prescription acne market is projected to reach approximately USD 600 million annually by 2035, highlighting the long-term commercial potential of the innovation.

Commenting on the development, Venkat Nelabhotla, Chief Executive Officer of Vyome Holdings, said that while the company's primary focus remains on advancing its lead clinical programme VT-1953 for malignant fungating wounds, it continues to strengthen its broader intellectual property portfolio in a capital-efficient manner. He noted that the Chinese patent enhances strategic opportunities for future partnerships, licensing and regional commercialisation without altering the company's current development priorities or requiring significant additional investment.

He added that a stronger intellectual property portfolio could enable non-dilutive growth opportunities while allowing the company to remain focused on advancing VT-1953 and building a leading immuno-inflammatory business.

Dr. Shiladitya Sengupta, Co-founder of Vyome and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, said durable intellectual property is essential for developing differentiated pharmaceutical innovations. He noted that the newly granted patent expands protection around Vyome's proprietary formulation technology and therapeutic applications, reinforcing the company's belief that innovation extends beyond active pharmaceutical ingredients to formulation science.

Vyome, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is building a biopharmaceutical innovation platform across the US-India corridor, with a focus on advancing clinical-stage therapies for immuno-inflammatory diseases while creating long-term shareholder value through cost-efficient innovation.
