West Pharmaceutical Services, an injectable drug administration solution company, has announced a definitive agreement to sell all manufacturing and supply rights for its SmartDose 3.5mL On-Body Delivery System, along with associated facilities, to AbbVie for a total consideration of USD 112.5 million at closing. The transaction is subject to working capital adjustments and customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed in mid-2026.

Under the terms of the agreement, West will continue the commercial supply of the medical device and execute ongoing critical project commitments prior to the transaction’s close. The agreement also provides for the potential of future project-related payments upon the achievement of certain milestones before closing.

West pioneered on-body delivery device technology for complex injectable medicines and transitioning the SmartDose 3.5mL product to AbbVie aligns with our patient-centric approach and focus on its broader customer development pipeline.”

SmartDose 3.5mL On-Body Delivery System revenues are expected to account for approximately 4 per cent of West’s total revenues in fiscal year 2025. The company said it will share additional financial details when it provides its 2026 outlook during the fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call scheduled for February.

The company clarified that it will continue to develop and manufacture all other SmartDose platforms, including the SmartDose 10mL On-Body Delivery System, which features adaptive technology designed to support larger drug volumes.
