Zydus Lifesciences has entered into a licensing and supply agreement with Torrent Pharmaceuticals to co-market Semaglutide injection in India.

Under the agreement, Zydus will manufacture and supply the product, while Torrent Pharma will hold semi-exclusive rights to co-market it in the country under its brand Sembolic. Zydus, on the other hand, will commercialise the drug under its brands Semaglyn, Mashema and Alterme. As part of the deal, Torrent Pharma will also pay an upfront licensing fee to Zydus.

The product features an innovative formulation of Semaglutide (15 mg/3 ml) delivered via a pre-filled cartridge using a reusable, patient-friendly pen device. Designed as a single-platform solution, the device supports administration across multiple dosage strengths and indications. This approach aims to improve patient convenience, enhance adherence and enable better long-term compliance—key factors in managing chronic conditions.

Semaglutide is indicated for adults with inadequately controlled type-II diabetes mellitus, both as a stand-alone therapy where metformin is unsuitable and in combination with other anti-diabetic treatments. Additionally, it is approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) or those overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one related comorbidity, such as hypertension, diabetes or dyslipidaemia.

The collaboration brings together Zydus’ strengths in product development and manufacturing with Torrent Pharma’s strong domestic market presence, with the shared goal of expanding access to advanced GLP-1 therapies for metabolic disorders in India.
